The Whiteaways building was built at a time when commercial and financial activities were booming in the area. It was also regarded as one of the finest blocks of offices in Penang. Its impressive architecture features beautiful eclectic-style windows, Scottish cast iron columns and grand granite staircases. Its charm was further accentuated by a decorative facade with plasterwork of flowers and garlands.
After the Second World War, the Whiteaways Building changed to house upmarket shops and offices and continued to do so until the 2000s when the repeal of the Rent Control Act forced tenants to vacate the building.
The site was restored and revived following the listing of George Town as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008.
When renovation works completed in 2011, the place was
renamed as The Whiteaways Arcade.
Today, it houses a variety of businesses, from cafes
and restaurants to retail and offices. Its new courtyard is now a venue for many artistic events and performances.
